The Chevy Volt separates itself from the electric car pack by offering a small gas engine to go along with the electric powerplant. This allows the Volt to extend its driving range beyond what it would be able to get with electricity alone.

Chevy continues to work on the technology as well, as the Volt will be extending its electric-only range from 35 to 38 miles on the 2013 version of the car. To extend the Volt's range, Chevy engineers tweaked the material composition of the battery cell chemistry.
