Medco as an Independent Board Member
FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medco Health
Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MHS) today announced the election of Tommy G.
Thompson to the company's board of directors, effective Dec. 13, 2006.
Thompson, 64, is the former Secretary of the Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS), and currently serves as a partner in the law firm of Akin
Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.
"Secretary Thompson is among the nation's leading health care
advocates, and has dedicated his career to innovative, landmark advances,
such as the Medicare Part D drug benefit, which for the first time extends
to the largest segment of uninsured Americans the promise of affordable
access to quality health care," said David B. Snow Jr., Medco's Chairman
and CEO. "His experience and vision complements our distinguished and
independent board, and will enhance Medco's ability to innovate, develop
and deliver programs that redefine pharmacy services and deliver greater
value to our clients and members."
Thompson added: "Medco continues to pioneer solutions that manage our
nation's growing prescription drug costs -- building state-of-the-art
automated pharmacies that make dispensing more accurate and less expensive,
developing clinical programs that improve patient safety and leveraging
technology to deliver tools that help consumers make smart, cost-effective
health care choices. I look forward to working with this experienced board
and Medco's energetic executive management team as, together, we deliver on
the promise that intelligent innovation can bring to prescription health
care and effecting positive change for tens of millions of Americans."
As HHS Secretary, Thompson was considered a trailblazer in the creation
of the Medicare Part D program, provided states and local communities with
resources to respond to terrorist attacks and public health emergencies,
and implemented campaigns encouraging Americans to adopt healthier
lifestyles.
During his 14-year tenure as Governor of Wisconsin, Thompson focused on
expanding access to health care for low-income individuals with "The
BadgerCare program," a health insurance program for uninsured families. As
a partner at Akin Gump, Thompson specializes in public law and policy,
helping clients in the health care industry, both public and private.
Thompson also serves as the independent chairman of the Deloitte Center for
Health Solutions, where he works on improving the use of information
technology in hospitals, clinics and doctors offices, and promotes healthy
lifestyles and expanding the use of medical diplomacy around the world.
