Feb 01, 2001, 00:00 ET from Tuxia, Inc.

AUGSBURG, Germany and BLOOMFIELD, N.J., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Tuxia
Deutschland GmbH today announced that its embedded system, TASTE, provides a
Linux-based operating system for National Semiconductor's Geode(TM) family of
high performance, low power consumption integrated processors.
The close partnership of Tuxia and National Semiconductor will enable a
whole new generation of Linux-based information appliances, such as personal
access devices, television set-top boxes, screen phones, information terminals
and thin-client computers. The market for these devices is expected to grow
rapidly, reaching 90 million users by 2004 in the U.S. and Europe alone,
according to estimates by research firm IDC.
"Linux is the operating system of choice for popular new information
appliances because it is fast, reliable and uses much less memory than
competing operating systems," said Hannes Eisele, Tuxia's co-founder and CEO.
"TASTE's unique, tightly optimized flash compression technology allows the
complex systems required for sophisticated information appliances to fit into
a minimum amount of flash memory."
"A key to leadership in the emerging information appliance market will be
to get to market quickly with an affordable and stable product," said Michael
Polacek, vice president of National's Information Appliance group. "The TASTE
Linux embedded system will reduce development time for product manufacturers
while providing improved efficiency, security and ease-of-use for consumers."
TASTE is the smallest, fully desktop compatible Linux-based embedded
system for Internet appliances and network computing. Designed to meet the
requirements of ready-to-use consumer devices such as thin clients, set-top
boxes, personal access devices, CRT pads, screen phones, information kiosks,
wireless gateway and control centers, TASTE features a tightly compressed
operating system, embedded Mozilla or Netscape-based browser, middleware and
development tools. Based on Linux Kernel 2.4, TASTE enables ease of
development with fast and easy integration of virtually all standard
components as well as third party applications.
