EASTON, Pa., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- At a grand opening ceremony today featuring a wine tasting, UFCW Local 1776 President Wendell Young praised the PLCB and its hardworking, educated clerks. "We're glad to be working with PLCB Chairman Jonathan Newman and Governor Ed Rendell to finally implement many of the reforms that our union has been suggesting for years," said Young. These reforms have included Sunday sales hours, specialty wine training for clerks, and discount stores, where Pennsylvania can take advantage of its massive buying power to offer customers better deals. "With the cooperation of Chairman Newman and Governor Rendell, we feel that we can finally give the citizens of the Commonwealth the convenience and service that they deserve, while maintaining the state's control," added John Meyerson, Legislative and Political Director of UFCW Local 1776. Guests at the grand opening ceremony were treated to a wine tasting, hosted by Tom Leonardini, II, of Whitehall Lane Winery in St. Helena, CA, and a barbeque sampling prepared by chef Jack McDavid of Jack's Firehouse in Philadelphia. The event was being covered by live broadcasts by WEST radio Easton, and WIP radio Philadelphia. "This discount outlet will directly challenge what New Jersey liquor stores have been doing for years, offering price breaks at the borders," said Young. "Innovations like this discount store will help to keep revenues in the Commonwealth," he added. At 12,000 square feet, this store will be the largest in the Commonwealth. The store will offer both a Premium Collection selection of wines, and discount prices, as well as Sunday sales.
