BERWICK, Pa., March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Operators at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant near Berwick, Luzerne County, Pa., safely shut down Unit 1 early Friday (3/4).

"We need to do maintenance work on a valve in an area of the plant where personnel can perform work only when the reactor is shut down," said Timothy S. Rausch , PPL's chief nuclear officer. "The work will be completed safely and the unit returned to service."

The system containing the valve is one of several that can provide cooling water to the reactor in the unlikely event normal systems became unavailable. All of those other systems had continued to function.

Unit 2 at the Susquehanna plant continues to operate at full power.

The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.

PPL Susquehanna is one of PPL Corporation's generating facilities. In addition to operating best-in-class utility operations in the United States and the United Kingdom, PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), headquartered in Allentown, Pa., owns or controls about 19,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States and sells energy in key U.S. markets.
