Univision/Chicago and Lewis University Collaboration Nets Significant Donation of Equipment

ROMEOVILLE, Ill., Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lewis University recently received a significant donation of television broadcast equipment from Univision/Chicago. The donation includes an entire digital control room, news set, robotic television cameras and a live news truck, among other items.

"The technology will allow our students to have major television market technology experience.  Large market production switchers, video and audio routers, VTR play out, camera robotics, and intercoms. This will not only enhance our facility, but continue to give our current and future students a competitive edge in major market broadcasting and television production," stated John Carey, director of the Andrew Center of Electronic Media at Lewis University.

Univision is in the process a multi-million dollar HDTV upgrade to their facilities in Chicago. As part of the transition, they are donating surplus equipment to Lewis University.

Univision/Chicago's connection with Lewis University has been ongoing for numerous years. Lewis University alumni P. Douglas Becker and Eugene Garcia are managers in the traffic department. Univision/Chicago Director of Engineering John Freberg is a 35-year adjunct professor at Lewis University. Student Maribel Barrera is the latest student to intern at Univision/Chicago. She is currently interning in engineering and operation management.

From the time undergraduates arrive on the Lewis University campus, Mass Communication students gain hands-on experience working in state-of-the-art facilities with Lewis' award winning student media organizations -- The Flyer newspaper; The Online Flyer website; WLRA Radio; and Lewis University Television Network, the university cable channel -- making Lewis an ideal destination for the 21st century student. The newly-updated Mass Communication major at Lewis is designed to help students develop a broad mastery of skills and engage audiences in an ever-changing media landscape. New concentrations in the department include Convergence Journalism; Corporate Communication; Public Relations/Advertising; and Radio, Television and New Media. Each concentration gives graduating students the perspective and skill set they need to be leaders in their respective fields.
