Profile America -- Monday, December 7th. At this time of year, we usually think about the presents we're buying to give family and friends. But with the unsettled economy, it's also a time to give to organizations that help those in need. The most obvious symbol is the Santa Claus or volunteers ringing bells on busy street corners or in shopping malls, but appeals from a wide range of charities come in the mail, over radio and television, and by e-mail. Americans have a history of reaching into their pockets and giving generously of both their money and time. The average tax return shows contributions of nearly $4,100 a year to charity.
