US Network Operators Examine Options as House Targets Huawei and ZTE for Deeper Scrutiny; Telecommunications Market Research Is Key to Owning the Future
FARMINGTON, Conn., Oct. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Amidst concerns about Huawei and ZTE tampering with U.S. telecommunications networks at the behest of the Chinese government, a recent US House Intelligence Committee report also suggests that the private-sector may want to reconsider its relationships with ZTE and Huawei for equipment and services. Major US network operators are having a second look at their relationships with these embattled companies, creating instability, volatility, and uncertainty for this usually temperate market.
Now is a critical time for organizations up and down the telecommunications market to come to terms with the shape of things to come, and nothing will be more useful for gaining quick and reliable insight than good market research. Farmington, CT-based Global Information Inc, an aggregator of market research reports, carries data on operator strategies, small cell networks, next generation wireless devices, and the global mobile network. Operator Strategies for Profitable Small Cell Networks 2012-2016
The biggest challenge for mobile operators in this decade is to narrow the gulf that has opened up between data demand and available wireless capacity. Two thirds of small cell base stations will be deployed in bands above 2.2GHz by 2016, compared to fewer than 40% in 2013. The use of small cells in public 3G and 4G networks will increase the usage, and the value, of spectrum of 2.3GHz and above. A key motivation for carriers to invest in this technology will be the ability to free up the vast capacity in high bands for mobile services.
The report forecasts that deployment of public access small cells, for 3G and 4G, will rise from under 30,000 in 2011 to 11.3m in 2016, amounting to a capex spend of almost $4bn, up tenfold in a five-year period. This leap in mobile capacity will enable new revenue streams, and will be partly driven by the availability of more spectrum, including a potential 100MHz in the 3.5GHz band. The ground-breaking study is based on a detailed survey, with interviews conducted over several months of 65 wireless operators worldwide which are planning public small cell deployments. According to the survey, backhauling millions of small cells, securing locations, and managing them effectively are the chief concerns. All of these are discussed in detail in the report.
