Impact of Three Refinery Shutdowns on State to be Cited

HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania leaders of the United Steelworkers (USW) will be joined by AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and invited Pennsylvania state assembly leaders in the State Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 12:00 Noon to cite growing concerns about the shutdown impact of three major oil refineries in Philadelphia.

Permanent closure of three oil refineries was announced last September for this year by Sunoco and ConocoPhillips, employing about 2,500 workers jobs in the Philadelphia area. The three refineries produce heating oil, diesel, jet and auto fuels -- processing more than 700,000 barrels a day of oil, or about 46 percent of the Northeast region's refining capacity. About one million Pennsylvanians use heating oil.

Union leaders from the Sunoco refineries in Philadelphia and Marcus Hook, PA, plus the ConocoPhillips refinery in Trainer, PA will be speaking and available for questions from the news media. The USW is calling for state and congressional public hearings and the search for potential buyers to keep the refineries operating.
