VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), The Data Availability Company,
today announced that VERITAS NetBackup(TM), with its enterprise-class backup
and recovery capabilities, now provides data protection for Linux
environments. Support for the Linux open-source operating system comes from
both VERITAS NetBackup(TM) DataCenter and VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer(TM).
VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter is a mainframe-strength solution designed for the
most data-intensive environments. VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer is an easy
to use solution designed for small- to medium-size enterprise installations,
combining the performance necessary for high-speed backups with an intuitive,
centralized administrative interface.
"Key software applications, such as VERITAS NetBackup, will help Linux
build upon its success in the Internet infrastructure space and forge into the
service provider and data-center environment," said Jamie Wagner, director of
technology at Rebel.com, a provider of business networking technology and
solutions. "VERITAS Software is globally recognized for protecting critical
business information in UNIX and heterogeneous environments, and now brings
the highest caliber of data protection to the Linux community."
"The availability of enterprise-class data backup and recovery solutions
for Linux, such as VERITAS NetBackup, complements the latest Intel-based
offerings from eServer* xSeries**," said Dr. Tom Bradicich, director of
architecture and design eServer xSeries, IBM. "This combination of VERITAS
software and IBM hardware will play an important role helping Linux gain
acceptance in the corporate IT environment."
VERITAS NetBackup brings advanced performance, ease of use and flexibility
to the task of protecting data on Linux servers. Powerful data multiplexing
and highly parallel operations combined with today's leading tape technologies
deliver the fastest possible backup and recovery performance. In addition,
VERITAS NetBackup automates the backup process with built-in support for all
leading tape robotics and libraries. With VERITAS NetBackup, IT
administrators can configure, monitor and control backup and recovery jobs
from an easy to use GUI interface, using built-in wizards.
"Hewlett Packard Company believes that data-protection software will
accelerate the transition of the Linux operating system to enterprise
businesses. Software management tools and high availability services
contribute to making Linux a more secure environment," said Mike Balma,
director of marketing, HP Linux Systems Operation.
Support of Linux environments further expands the flexibility of VERITAS
NetBackup, which already protects servers running Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX,
Compaq Tru64, SGI Irix and Windows 2000 platforms, among others. The first
Linux version supported is Red Hat Linux.
"Critical business data stored on Linux servers will only continue to grow
as Linux becomes more pervasive in workgroups and data centers through
organizations," said Paul McNamara, V.P. of Products and Platforms, Red Hat.
"Enterprise Linux deployments require the enterprise-class data protection
provided by VERITAS NetBackup for Red Hat Linux, which is a proven provider of
the performance, scalability and reliability that our customers demand."
Linux environments will also benefit from VERITAS Software's
"database-aware" backup solutions, which provide online, nondisruptive backup
and recovery of databases. This includes the ability to perform full or
incremental backups and automate much of the recovery process. The first
database backup solution for the Linux environment protects Oracle(R)
databases via an option to VERITAS NetBackup.
"The emergence of key enterprise software solutions, such as VERITAS
NetBackup, will help Linux make inroads into the data center environment,"
said Bill Claybrook, research director, Aberdeen Group "VERITAS Software's
experience protecting critical business information in UNIX and heterogeneous
