WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran aerospace and defense analyst Byron Callan will join the Washington-based policy forecasting firm Capital Alpha Partners, LLC as Director, effective December 1, 2010.
Callan is most noted for having been a top sell-side analyst at Merrill Lynch and Prudential Securities covering defense, defense electronics and engineering/industrial stocks between 1984 and 2007. During that period, he earned a ranking on Institutional Investor's All-America Research Team a total of 15 years.
Since 2007, Callan has burnished his unique credentials and reputation at two buy-side firms. He worked at Perella Weinberg Partners from 2007-2010, where he was a co-founder and analyst on that firm's Aerospace Defense Security fund. And in 2010, he did a stint as a portfolio manager on an industrials fund at Lion's Path Capital.
According to Capital Alpha co-founder and president Charles Gabriel, Callan's coverage of the defense budget and weapons programs at the three-year-old firm "will turn the traditional DC policy research model on its head." Washington-based political forecasting groups "have long been populated by former journalists, Hill staffers and lobbyists who have learned to speak Wall Street's language in order to translate and forecast political risk for institutional investors," Gabriel asserts. By contrast, Callan's wonky mastery of Washington's language -- combined with his years of experience in modeling the impact of budget decisions and comparing strengths and weaknesses of defense contractors' respective program bases -- will allow him to better analyze the investment significance of policy decisions and trends, "which will only grow in importance as budget pressures become more pressing."
Among other notable achievements, Callan has testified before Congress and participated in strategic crisis exercises and industrial base war games at the Army War College and with DoD. He has also contributed to an Institute for Defense Analysis study on defense contract profit policy and has had book reviews published in the Journal of Military History.
He has an MBA from Columbia University and a BA with Special Honors from George Washington University.
Callan is married to the former Allison Burrow of New Orleans, and they have three children. He and his family reside in Connecticut, from which he will regularly commute to Washington in his new role.
