VIDEO: Brazilian Government Tackling Climate Change in Brazil

Deforestation reduction and promotion of renewable energies are at the center of Brazil's National Plan on Climate Change

BRASILIA, Brazil, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Brazilian National Plan on Climate Change, launched in December 2008, comprises a set of over one hundred actions and programs to reduce carbon emissions across different sectors of the Brazilian economy. The two main tactics emphasized in the plan -- measures to tackle deforestation and promote the use of biofuels and other renewable energy sources -- are expected to lead Brazil's transition to a low-carbon economy.

According to the latest data from the 1st National Emissions Inventory, deforestation and land-use change account for up to 75 percent of Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, combating deforestation is at the center of the national strategy to tackle global warming.

The National Plan on Climate Change sets domestic targets to reduce deforestation in the Amazon by 80 percent by the year 2020 and includes cross-governmental efforts to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures, create new conservation units and promote sustainable activities in the region.

As a result of the national plan, deforestation in the Amazon already dropped 45.7 percent from August 2008 to July 2009, reaching the lowest levels since the government started monitoring deforestation in 1988. This significant decline in deforestation is a key component of the Brazilian government's plan to cut at least 36.1 percent of the overall 80 percent greenhouse gas emissions target for 2020 through voluntary mitigation actions.
