Villager Newspapers to expand local sports coverage
WOODSTOCK, Conn., Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Villager Newspapers, publishers of four community newspapers covering the area of northeast Connecticut known as the Quiet Corner, announced today that it will be greatly enhancing its local sports coverage.
Beginning September 20th, the four Villager Newspapers, which cover the towns of Killingly, Putnam, Woodstock and Thompson, will feature a new all-local sports section. "Northeast Connecticut has a rich history of local sports, including high school sports, and quite frankly this is something we should have been covering a long time ago," said Frank Chilinski, president and publisher of Villager Newspapers. "We've always done a good job covering local news, and we've received tremendous support from readers and advertisers alike. When they began asking for more local sports coverage, I knew we needed to answer that call."
Sports coverage will include all local high school teams and other local sports as well. "We are excited about this, the whole staff is, and we want to encourage people to send in their local sports photos. We'll be out covering all the games and we'll want to spotlight as many teams as possible and really celebrate the vitality and fun of local sports," said Chilinski.
Leading the endeavor will be full time sports editor and Pomfret Center resident Charlie Lentz. "I have known Charlie for quite a while and honestly he's one of the best sportswriters around. We're lucky to have him on board," said Chilinski. "I'm just very happy to join the Villager staff," Lentz said. "I'm looking forward to getting our readers in the Quiet Corner the best sports coverage I can." Rounding out the team is editor and Eastford resident Adam Minor. "I can't tell you how excited I am to be a part of this," said Minor, "and I am looking forward to seeing the reaction of the communities we cover when we finally debut our new section."
Other local residents such as news reporter and Thompson resident Jason Bleau frequently contribute to the Villager Newspapers and the office is staffed by Woodstock resident Teri Stohlberg and advertising account executive Sarah Mortensen, of Brooklyn.
