NEW HAVEN, Conn., Feb. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Vinay Nayak became politically active as a student. His passion developed young when he would routinely read about the political activities in his hometown outside Chicago, Illinois. His passion followed him to New Haven, Connecticut when he was accepted to Yale University. "Despite the reputation that New Haven has for crime, I was eager to continue my education with some of the nation's brightest students," says Vinay Nayak.

Vinay Nayak made the ultimate decision as a sophomore student to run for the political position of Ward 1 Alderman. Part of his political focus is homelessness. "I've always believed that the most change occurs at the local level. Grassroots movements are important and activists can get involved at any age," states Vinay Nayak. This idea carries into his fight against homelessness.

Part of his platform while running for Alderman is New Haven's homelessness. There are two organizations already devoted to the cause; "two of the largest organizations are Yale Hunger and the Homelessness Action Project but the city needs to keep it's "no-freeze" promise," says Vinay Nayak.

"Homelessness is a real problem not only in New Haven but throughout the United States. Many cities can easily budget more money for housing programs," states Vinay Nayak. It is his personal belief that housing programs will help the community by dropping the number of homeless citizens and helping individuals become functional members of society. "Relieving the city of its homeless population is just one more step we can take to change the perception of New Haven," says Vinay Nayak.

With an optimistic spirit, Vinay Nayak strongly believes that New Haven's homeless population can be greatly reduced within a decade  if funds are allocated to programs preventing homelessness. In his run for Ward 1 Alderman of New Haven, homelessness was one of Vinay Nayak's strongest platforms in addition to greater government transparency, revitalizing the economy, and securing the safety of the community.
