Visit the British Museum's First-Ever Exhibit of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Then Explore Pompeii and Italy's Amalfi Coast by Gulet -- Only with Peter Sommer Travels: Rated among 2013's Top 25 Trips to Italy by the Times of London Rated among 2013's Top 25 Trips to Italy by the Times of London

MONMOUTH, U.K., April 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- For a truly once-in-a-lifetime thrill, visit London this spring and summer to enjoy the British Museum's first-ever exhibit on Pompeii and Herculaneum, then travel to Italy and walk the ancient streets of Pompeii, guided by leading experts in archaeology, history and art, only with Peter Sommer Travels.

Through September 29, the British Museum will present Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, a major exhibition on the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the first ever held on these important cities at the British Museum, and the first such major exhibition in London for almost 40 years. The exhibit brings together more than 250 fascinating objects, both recent discoveries and celebrated finds from earlier excavations, many of which have never before been seen outside Italy. The exhibition has a unique focus on the Roman home and the people who lived in these ill-fated cities.

The perfect complement, before or after visiting the exhibit, Peter Sommer Travels' unique 8-day "Cruising the Amalfi Coast" itinerary is escorted by archaeologist and historian Dr. Michael Metcalfe and art historian Francesca del Vecchio, and was chosen as one of 2013's "Top 25 Tours to Italy" by The Times of London.

Visits to the archaeological museum in Naples, where some of the most evocative finds from Pompeii are displayed, and to Pompeii itself, are highlights, complemented by cruising to Capri and Amalfi, enjoying delectable meals on board and on land, and swimming and exploring lovely islands and coves along the way. An optional side trip to Herculaneum can also be arranged.

Most tours of the Amalfi Coast are by land, but only Peter Sommer Travels combines cruising in a hand-built traditional wooden Turkish gulet with daily land excursions to explore the history, culture and cuisine of this spectacular region.

Limited to just 10 guests, weeklong itineraries depart June 8, September 7 and September 14 and cost $US 5,400/C$5,515 per person double, including seven nights on board, all meals, airport transfers from and to Naples airport, and all entrance fees, as well as WiFi (when coverage permits). Airfare to and from Naples, where the tour begins, is not included. For more details, visit 'Cruising the Amalfi Coast' or contact

Tickets to Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum can also be arranged, when requested in conjunction with a confirmed 'Cruising the Amalfi Coast' booking.

Background on the British Museum's Pompeii and Herculaneum Exhibit:

Pompeii and Herculaneum, two cities on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, were buried by a catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in just 24 hours in AD 79. This event ended the life of the cities but at the same time preserved them until rediscovery by archaeologists nearly 1700 years later, providing unparalleled insight into Roman life.

Owing to their different locations, Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried in different ways and this has affected the preservation of materials at each site. Herculaneum was a small seaside town whereas Pompeii was the industrial hub of the region.

In addition to furniture and other artifacts, the exhibition will include casts from in and around Pompeii of some of the victims of the eruption. A family of two adults and their two children are huddled together, just as in their last moments under the stairs of their villa. The most famous of the casts on display is of a dog, fixed forever at the moment of its death as the volcano submerged the cities.
