WealthCounsel Launches "Creating Lasting Legacies" Campaign in Conjunction With National Estate Planning Awareness Week Campaign Combines Public Awareness-Building with a Video Contest to Showcase the Expertise of Attorneys Who Each Day Are Helping Families and Businesses Create Lasting Legacies

MADISON, Wis., Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- WealthCounsel, a nationwide organization of tax, estate, and business planning attorneys, announced the launch of the "Creating Lasting Legacies" campaign – an awareness-building initiative designed to educate the public about the importance of estate planning.  The timing for the launch of the campaign will help showcase National Estate Planning Awareness Week, Oct. 17-23, 2011.

In 2008, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC) worked with Congressional leaders to pass H. Res.1499 designating the third week of October as National Estate Planning Awareness Week.  According to the resolution, it is estimated that over 120 million Americans do not have up-to-date estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely death.  A 2004 poll issued by the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) found that two-thirds of Americans over the age of 65 believe they lack the knowledge necessary to adequately plan for retirement, and nearly one half of all Americans are unfamiliar with basic retirement tools, such as a 401(k) plan.

In a 2010 industry trends survey conducted by WealthCounsel, nearly 70 percent of the 831 attorneys responding to the survey indicated that Americans fail to plan because they lack awareness of the consequences of not having a plan in place. In addition to that alarming statistic, 62 percent of the respondents indicated that clients fail to plan because they are under the assumption that estate planning is only for the wealthy, and 23 percent stated that many consumers lack financial literacy about the need to preserve assets for subsequent generations.
