Workers United/SEIU Statement in Support of Councilman Wilson Goode's Resolution to Apply Philadelphia's Living Wage Law to School Workers
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lynne Fox, Manager of Workers United's Philadelphia Joint Board, made the following statement praising Councilman Goode's proposal to apply the city's living wage law to school food service workers and noon time aides:
"Last week, Workers United exposed the poverty wages that too many Philadelphia school employees earn. We believed then -- and continue to believe -- that the school district is not meeting the Philadelphia 21st Century Minimum Wage and Benefits Standard and could underpay school cafeteria workers $2.1 million this school year alone.
"Councilman Goode heard our concerns about workers living in poverty and agreed that school workers should earn a living wage. This shared commitment to economic justice is why the councilman is introducing a resolution calling on the School Reform Commission to pay the $10.88 required by the law.
"These cafeteria and school workers feed and nurture Philadelphia's future. For far too long, they have suffered from low wages and inadequate benefits. With Councilman Goode's resolution, they have a chance to earn a living wage. With the support of the Philadelphia Joint Board, cafeteria workers can finally have the union they deserve."
