Wyse and Novell Collaborate on Linux Thin Clients
Wyse Works with Novell to Simplify Adoption and Implementation of Linux
Thin Clients
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology, the global
leader in thin computing, today announced it is working with Novell to
bring the next generation of Linux-based thin clients to market. Both
companies are committed to giving customers everything they need to
transition from traditional desktops with proprietary operating systems to
Wyse thin clients based on SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell.
With this partnership, customers who prefer Linux can now deploy a thin
computing environment that leverages a standard operating system throughout
the enterprise with a consistent, rich user interface. As a result,
customers can realize lower operating costs, increased data security and
dramatically improved manageability. Wyse customers are today using SUSE
Linux Enterprise on Wyse thin clients in limited installations.
"This effort will result in giving users more choice and flexibility
when deploying Linux on thin clients," said Ricardo Antuna, Vice President
of Business Development for Wyse Technology. "We are continuing to work
together to deliver more value by allowing organizations to easily
standardize on Linux without compromising on security, scalability and
performance."
SUSE Linux Enterprise Thin Client from Novell is the only
enterprise-quality Linux solution that provides easy configuration and
management of desktop operating system images. It simplifies desktop
management tasks such as application updates by maintaining applications on
the server, while increasing security with central storage of sensitive
data. In addition, it combines the compelling cost advantages of Linux with
the innovative capabilities unique to SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, from
which it is derived.
"The market opportunity for Linux and thin computing is tremendous,"
said John Judge, vice president of worldwide alliances at Novell. "We
already have several customers deploying SUSE Linux Enterprise on Wyse thin
client devices. In the coming months, we look forward to working even more
closely with Wyse and increasing our market momentum."
Windsor Unified School District has already deployed SUSE Linux
Enterprise products on Wyse devices. Heather Carver, director of Technology
and Information Services for the Windsor Unified School District, said, "By
moving to a Wyse thin-client architecture running on SUSE Linux Enterprise
Desktop, our school district has reduced its hardware costs by 75 percent
and software costs by nearly 95 percent. This saving accounts for nearly 50
percent of the district's IT budget, which we can now allocate towards
other projects. We now have a secure and centrally managed computing
environment, making the most of our limited resources."
Both Wyse and Novell will be exhibiting at LinuxWorld in booth #702,
where Wyse products are being showcased.
