HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Children visiting the Pennsylvania Farm Show can become "Farm Show Detectives" and investigate where milk comes from, explore alternative energy options and discover the important role bees play in growing food, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said today.

The eight-day show is Jan. 9-16, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg.

"Pennsylvania's agriculture industry offers an infinite number of learning opportunities," said Redding. "As 'Farm Show Detectives,' youth visiting the Farm Show can learn about where their food comes from through interactive learning stations staffed by industry experts and develop an appreciation for the state's number one industry."

The "detectives" will use a special map to guide them to 20 learning stations located throughout the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Learning station headquarters are at the Department of Agriculture booth in the Main Hall where participants can register and enter to win prizes sponsored by Turkey Hill.

The grand prize is one year of free ice cream. One winner will be chosen each day for the "daily detective prize," a Turkey Hill Party Pack. Five winners will be chosen each day to receive Turkey Hill cows and replica trucks, and 20,000 other giveaways during the week from Turkey Hill.

The stations will be marked with a lamppost and signage and will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the show. The stations include: alpacas; horses; beef and veal; goats, deer and bison; dairy; the butter sculpture; family living center; apples; bees; dogs; vegetables; the WoodMobile; poultry; rabbits; swine; edible nuts; farmland preservation; food safety; renewable energy and veterinary medicine.

Farm Show Ambassadors will be on hand in blue vests at the agriculture department's booth to help the young investigators and their families find their way from station to station.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 270 commercial exhibitors.
