The new statewide waste composition report developed by Burns & McDonnell found that the percentage of plastics thrown away has increased from 11 percent to 18 percent and organics from 26 percent to 31 percent of the waste stream as compared to the 2000 study. Robert Craggs, solid waste and recycling practice leader at Burns & McDonnell, said the trend speaks to the need to recycle more types of plastics, and that there are programs local governments can take advantage of that enable their residents to be better stewards of the environment.
