ABC7 Eyewitness News Poll Calls LA Mayoral Election

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from ABC7

LOS ANGELES, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- With our exclusive Eyewitness News
Poll conducted by SurveyUSA, only ABC7 Eyewitness News accurately projected
that former state Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa would win the Los
Angeles Mayoral election, News Director Cheryl Fair said today.
The Eyewitness News poll of 1200 likely voters projected Villaraigosa to
come in first with 31% of the vote. His actual total as of this morning is
30%. The poll put City Attorney James Hahn in second place and businessman
Steve Soboroff in third place. Their actual totals were within the poll's
 3% margin-of-error. The poll was conducted April 6th - April 8th. All
competing polls had Villaraigosa locked in a two-way tie with Hahn or a
three-way tie with Hahn and Soboroff. Villaraigosa and Hahn will face off in
 a non-partisan runoff election on June 5.
ABC7 Eyewitness News began tracking the contest mid-March, recording in
three separate polls Villaraigosa's surge from mid-teens to nearly a third of
city voters. Support for Hahn, who began as front-runner in the race,
remained flat with about a quarter of voters choosing him over the other
14 candidates. Soboroff picked up voters in the weeks leading up to the
election, but not enough to beat Hahn.
ABC7 Eyewitness News, Southern California's number one station for news,
will continue to track the Los Angeles mayor's contest, polling voters up
 until the June 5 runoff.
