FORT SMITH, Ark., Aug. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- ArcBest℠ (Nasdaq: ARCB), a leading logistics company with creative problem solvers who deliver integrated solutions, is pleased to announce that ABF Freight® driver Tony Spero won third place in the tank truck class at the 2017 National Truck Driving Championships.
To earn the right to compete in the national competition, drivers must win first place in their class during state competitions. The drivers also must maintain an accident-free driving record for the preceding 12 months.
"Tony is a great example of a trucking professional who is dedicated to making our nation's highways safer for all drivers," ABF Freight President Tim Thorne said. "He not only earned the right to compete at nationals by winning first place in the Connecticut tank class, he was Connecticut's 2017 grand champion and had the highest written test score. We are proud of his accomplishments."
Spero, of Stratford, Connecticut, has been a professional driver with ABF Freight for 28 years. He previously has been a national champion in the tank truck class (2009) and the flatbed class (2006), and in 2013 placed second at nationals in the tank truck class. Twice, he has been the Connecticut Driver of the Year (2013 and 2004) and is a six-time state grand champion. Since 1999, Spero also has served as a Trucker Buddy, which matches professional truck drivers to be pen pals with school-age children. He and his wife, Dee Dee, have two children.
The 2017 National Truck Driving Championships took place Aug. 9-12 in Orlando, Florida.
The National Truck Driving Championships, which dates to 1937, is a competition of professional truck drivers hosted each year by the American Trucking Associations. Drivers undergo a written examination, pre-trip inspection test and a driving skills test. The National Truck Driving Championships and the affiliated state Truck Driving Championships are considered one of the trucking industry's largest and most effective safety programs.
