    SAN FRANCISCO, RSA 2001 Conference, April 11 /PRNewswire/ --
ActivCard (Nasdaq: ACTI; Easdaq), a leading provider of digital identity
management products and technology, today announced reaching its
250,000th customer license, leading a trend in which digital identity is
employed as a critical, required feature of network computing.
"While cryptographic technologies used for authentication, including PKI
and one-time-use password tokens have been around for years, multi-function
smart cards, utilizing these technologies have only recently been introduced
to the market," commented Thomas Arthur, senior vice president of sales and
business development at ActivCard. "We estimate that within a two year
period, the number smart cards used in IT will exceed the number of tokens
sold in the past ten years."
The firm's ActivCard Gold system is being rolled out to employees of
Hewlett Packard, Sun Microsystems, the US Department of Defense, Lloyds TSB
Bank and other corporations and government groups. Citibank and Datacard are
deploying ActivCard identity solutions under OEM licensing agreements.

     Leading the Trend
"In an era of economic uncertainty, new web-centric business processes are
emerging that reduce corporate costs and improve efficiencies. To use these
new web-based systems effectively, companies must feel confident that the
people accessing the systems are who they say they are," said Arthur.
In an effort to enable large-scale cost reduction programs, the U.S.
Department of Defense is utilizing ActivCard software worldwide to issue a
planned 4.3 million smart card-based ID badges to all DoD employees and
contractors. The new badges will support a wide range of functionality from
building access to financial services to digital identity for access to
government services and information containing personnel information and
processing credentials that enable digital signature, encryption, and strong
 user authentication.
Companies such as Hewlett-Packard, are deploying ActivCard solutions to
employees world-wide, migrating away from existing, single function
token-based system to a multi-function smart card-based solution offering new
levels of mobility, security and user convenience.
Sun Microsystems, through a service provided by ActivCard licensee,
Citicorp, is issuing new corporate ID badges to all employees. The new Java
Card-based ID badges consolidate a number of current employee credentials and
IDs including -- picture ID, building access card, network login, digital
signature, remote access token, and static passwords.
Teaming with Datacard, the leading provider of plastic card
personalization and identity management solutions, ActivCard software is
enabling a combined photo ID, physical access, remote access, network login
and digital signature solution on a managed multi-function card. The complete
solution, being sold by Datacard's distributors in over 120 countries
worldwide, enables companies to reduce their total cost relative to these
identification credentials being separately managed devices.

Smart ID Card: Saving Time, Money
ActivCard's digital identity software enables companies to manage
applications, credentials and data used to identify individual users accessing
 web-based services, applications or content.
With one card and a PIN code, employees can consolidate their identity
needs for remote computing, office building access, health care service
identification and other needs. ActivCard's system saves time from managing
duplicate systems, and speeds up organizational processes. For example, the
DoD demonstrated that an eight hour troop deployment registration could be
completed in less than one hour with ActivCard.
