ADAPTEC to Lead iSCSI Interoperability and Marketing Initiatives for SNIA's iSCSI Group

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from Adaptec, Inc.

MILPITAS, Calif., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADPT),
the global leader in storage access solutions, today announced that Jim
Bernard, director of strategic development for Adaptec's Storage Networking
Group, and Peter Aylaian, director of marketing for Adaptec's Storage
Networking Group, are leading key initiatives for the newly formed iSCSI Group
within the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA).
Bernard will work to assure interoperability of iSCSI hardware and
software as they become available. The recently opened SNIA Technology Center
will also be utilized for interoperability "plug fests." In April, iSCSI
interoperability will be demonstrated at Storage Networking World, April 9
through April 11, in Palm Desert, California, as part of the emerging
 technologies demonstrations.
Aylaian will coordinate the iSCSI Group's marketing efforts to promote the
visibility of iSCSI products and solutions, and iSCSI as the preferred
protocol for native SCSI encapsulation on IP networks. These efforts include
publishing white papers, developing educational materials, and presenting
information at trade shows and conferences.
"Marketing the advantages of IP Storage technologies and interoperability
are the most important functions of the iSCSI Group and the SNIA IP Storage
Forum as a whole," said Doug Ingraham, co-chair of the SNIA IP Storage Forum
and manager of product marketing in the Storage Router Business Unit at Cisco
Systems. "The cooperative efforts among companies who are driving the iSCSI
standard will help us all attain our vision of interoperable, industry
standards for maximum flexibility and usability by a broad market."
"We are pleased that Adaptec continues to play an active role and take on
leadership positions during this important industry transition to a new era in
storage," said Max Steinhardt, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's
Storage Networking Group. "Adaptec intends to be at the forefront of
addressing the issues of interoperability and marketplace adoption which have
 caused difficulty for Fibre Channel."
The appointment of these two Adaptec directors to coordinate iSCSI
interoperability and marketing on an industry-wide basis comes on the heels of
the election of Bill Lynn, Adaptec senior manager for fabric solutions, to the
governing board of the SNIA IP Storage Forum. Adaptec is also an active
participant in the iSCSI standards initiative within the IETF. The company
recently announced the AEA-7110C iSCSI host bus adapter, and will start
rolling out its iSCSI-enabled network interface cards (NICs) and iSCSI
 controllers this summer.
The iSCSI Group was recently formed as part of the SNIA IP Storage Forum
to promote iSCSI as the standard for transmitting lock-level storage data over
native IP storage area networks (SANs). iSCSI is the preferred protocol for
native SCSI encapsulation on IP networks. More than twenty companies have
initially joined the iSCSI Subgroup, signaling the industry's coalescence
around the iSCSI protocol. The iSCSI Work Group encourages broad industry
participation. For additional information, please visit www.snia.org.
