Adaptec USB 2.0 Host Adapter Passes USB-IF Certification Testing

Adaptec Powers New USB 2.0 High-Speed Peripherals

Apr 04, 2001, 01:00 ET from Adaptec, Inc.

MILPITAS, Calif., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADPT),
the global leader in data storage access solutions, today announced that it
has received certification from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for its
 USB 2.0 host bus adapter.
"Adaptec takes pride in being one of the first USB 2.0 host bus adapters
to pass USB-IF Compliance Testing," said Jeff Loebbaka, vice president and
general manager of Adaptec's Desktop Solutions Group. "Our goal is to speed
the adoption of USB 2.0 technology by providing high-quality connectivity
solutions for USB peripherals. Adaptec is committed to bringing consumers
affordable and reliable desktop connectivity solutions."
In order to use the USB logo, the USB-IF requires Universal Serial Bus
(USB) 2.0-enabled products to pass compliance testing in several areas
including: electrical tests, interoperability tests and functional tests.
Products also have to work well for both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 systems, hubs and
 peripherals.
"Adaptec's USB 2.0 solution performed extremely well during USB-IF
certification testing. I was impressed with its robustness and
high-performance. Adaptec has a strong brand name and is known throughout the
industry for its high standards in reliability, compatibility quality and
technical support," said Takahiro Tokuume, senior manager in NEC's
Semiconductor Solutions Engineering Division, NEC Electron Devices and member
of the Board of Directors of the USB-IF. "Their entrance into the USB 2.0
marketplace provides reliable connectivity solutions for peripheral developers
 and manufacturers."
Products that have passed testing are eligible to participate in the "USB
Certified" Logo Program. Only products displaying the new USB red, white and
blue logo have passed USB-IF compliance testing.
"The USB-IF compliance and logo program will help to improve the consumer
experience with USB," said Jason Ziller, Intel technology initiatives manager
and USB-IF chairman. "We are pleased to see Adaptec participating in this
program with their USB 2.0 host adapter."
At forty times faster than the USB 1.1 specification, the new USB 2.0
standard is ideal for high-speed peripherals because it provides the higher
bandwidth necessary for external hard disks, high-speed scanners, CD-RW and
DVD storage drives. USB 2.0 can also still be used to connect lower speed USB
1.1 devices like digital cameras, modems, keyboards, mice, digital joysticks,
tape and floppy drives, digital scanners and printers to computers. USB is
very simple for consumers to use. It is the no-hassle, "plug and play"
solution for connecting up to 127 individual USB peripherals at one time.
With over 20 years of expertise in developing high-speed connectivity
solutions, Adaptec has extended its leadership in high-speed I/O solutions to
providing the most reliable and best-supported USB products. Adaptec makes it
easy for consumers to connect PCs and Macintosh computers to peripheral
devices and is supporting this emerging I/O interface with new connectivity
products and solutions to power the next generation of devices. With the
introduction of new USB 2.0 solutions, Adaptec continues to maintain its
 leadership in desktop connectivity.
