ST. PAUL, Minn., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- ADDCO, Inc. announced today
deployment of a sophisticated intelligent transportation system ordered by the
Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) for use at three key Kansas City
Speedway events. The system includes 12 portable changeable message signs
strategically placed at four approaches to the Speedway, three Smart Zone(R)
portable traffic management systems, two Highway Advisory Radio systems,
 traffic control and operations.
Kansas City is home to a prestigious speedway, where thousands of fans
converge to watch racing events, including the infamous NASCAR race each fall.
Managing the corresponding congestion efficiently and safely has become one of
KDOT's top priorities. Earlier this year, KDOT conducted a scanning tour of
available technologies, and was impressed by ADDCO's sophisticated yet
portable solutions, including the Smart Zone.
The Smart Zone integrates dynamic message signs, detection devices, and
surveillance cameras on one fully portable, solar-powered platform. The Smart
Zone communicates using 2.4GHz spread spectrum radio, allowing full-motion
video. From live traffic images and complementary detection data, operators
then send updated traffic information to motorists in real-time.
"We were extremely impressed by ADDCO's proposed solutions to our Speedway
traffic challenges, and their willingness to work with us to design a
cost-effective system that could be easily deployed at each event and then
disassembled," stated Matt Volz, KDOT State ITS Engineer. "We are confident
that with ADDCO's products and event management, motorists will arrive at the
 events more safely and efficiently."
The entire system and related traffic control operations will be rented by
KDOT from United Rentals, who will purchase most of the related equipment from
ADDCO. The system will be deployed for three separate events in 2001,
culminating with the NASCAR race in September. In addition to supplying
equipment, ADDCO will set up the communications network and provide overall
 event management.
Founded in 1953, ADDCO, Inc. is a leading supplier of traffic control
products worldwide. ADDCO also manufactures and distributes a full line of
portable changeable message signs, the BRICK(R) modular message sign system,
portable traffic signals, and the revolutionary Virtual Transportation
Operations Center (VTOC(TM)) software and systems. ADDCO welcomes visitors to
