Sep 16, 2003, 01:00 ET from Albertsons, Inc.

BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Albertsons, Inc.
(NYSE: ABS), announced today the expansion of its online grocery service,
Albertsons.com, to Boise area residents. The website is now accepting orders
and deliveries will begin today to 13 Boise area zip codes. With this
expansion, Albertsons.com now serves eight major metropolitan areas in the
Western states -- the largest geographic reach of any online grocery provider.

"Albertsons.com will provide shoppers with flexibility to complement their
busy lifestyle," explained Larry Johnston, Chairman of the Board and CEO.
"With a 90-minute delivery window or the alternative of picking up pre-ordered
groceries at the store of their choice, our dot-com service is a continuation
of our promise to make our customers' lives easier."
Shoppers may go to the Albertsons.com website, register and place their
order for either delivery or in-store pick-up. Online orders placed by
10 a.m. will be available for pick-up after 5 p.m. the same day; orders placed
by midnight will be delivered or available for pick up the following day. A
nominal fee of $9.95 is charged for door-to-door delivery or $4.95 for pick-up
 service.
Albertsons uses its existing brick-and-mortar store infrastructure to
support the online service, providing a full selection of grocery, pharmacy
and dry-good items. A total of 15 neighborhood stores in the Boise valley
will offer the pick-up service. Albertsons is the only online retail grocery
shopping service offering a pick-up option.
"Albertsons was the first national brick-and-mortar chain to offer the
online grocery service to its customers and, as a hometown grocery chain we
are proud to be the first to bring this service to the Boise area community,"
said Bob Colgrove, Intermountain Division President. "We have been pleased
with our Internet shopping results in Seattle, San Diego, Southern California,
Portland, Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area, and we believe we will
achieve great success in our own backyard of Boise."
Albertsons is using a measured, strategic approach to expanding its online
service. The company created its own website and tied the Internet service to
existing pricing and inventory systems. All products ordered through
Albertsons.com are available at the same competitive prices available in Boise
area stores. By utilizing its existing store infrastructure, grocery
expertise, and technology investments, Albertsons is able to expand to new
 markets with minimal capital investment.
Today, Larry Johnston and Bob Colgrove personally made Boise's first
Albertsons.com delivery to the Boise Senior Activities Center. As a
demonstration of Albertsons' continued commitment to the communities it
serves, the Boise Senior Activities Center was given a $1,000 online shopping
spree, which they logged on and used just last night.
"We at the Boise Senior Activities Center are so appreciative of the
donation Albertsons has made. The groceries we ordered online will provide
nutritious meals for the men and women who depend on our center. The website
is easy to use, beautifully organized, and we love the fact that they
delivered it to our front door," said Manager Rod Jaszkowiak.
Albertsons uses trained personal "e-shoppers" to pick orders out of
existing stores. The e-shoppers are trained to select grocery items as if
they are shopping for themselves -- choosing the highest quality and freshest
produce, meat and bakery items, dairy products, flowers, etc. These shoppers
ensure that every item in a customer's order is accurate, packed carefully,
and stored properly until it is in the hands of the customer.
To kick off the program, Albertsons will feature an e-coupon promotion for
the first four weeks of service: Week of 9/16, spend $50 on Albertsons.com
and receive a FREE full case of Aquafina water. Week of 9/23, spend $50, and
receive a dozen red roses FREE. Week of 9/30, spend $50, and receive a half
gallon of Dreyer's ice cream FREE. And during the week of 10/7, spend $50 and
receive a gourmet apple pie FREE. Details of these offers can be found in
this week's Albertsons mailers and newspaper ads.
Albertsons.com was originally launched in Seattle in November 1999. The
company expanded its online service to 146 zip codes in San Diego County in
October 2001, and added approximately 400 zip codes in Southern California in
February 2002. In March 2002, the service was expanded to 53 zip codes in the
greater Portland/Vancouver area and over 100 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Las Vegas was added in November 2002 -- servicing 84 zip codes.
