Alcan sells Martinswerk hydrate and alumina specialties plant

    ZURICH, Switzerland, April 27 /PRNewswire/ - Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSE : AL)
 today announced the sale of its alumina specialties production plant,
 Alusuisse Martinswerk GmbH, located in Bergheim, Germany to Albemarle
 Corporation headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Albermarle Corporation
 is a global supplier of specialty chemicals and chemical intermediates.
     The sale is part of the divestment requirements imposed by the European
 Commission as a condition to its approval of the merger between Alcan and
 Alusuisse Group Ltd in October 2000. The transaction is subject to the
 approval by the relevant authorities. Alcan will realize proceeds of
 approximately US$44 million from this sale, which falls within the US$400
 million asset disposition program announced on December 12, 2000.
     Martinswerk supplies specialized aluminum hydroxides and oxide products
 to many customers including in the plastic, paper, paint, refractory,
 catalyst, ceramic and chemical industries
