Allen Telecom's MIKOM Division Signs Agreement to Install 850 In-Train Repeaters for Swiss GSM Operators

Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from Allen Telecom Inc.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio, April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- Allen
Telecom Inc. (NYSE: ALN) today announced that its MIKOM division has signed an
agreement with the three Swiss GSM operators and the Swiss railway operator,
to manufacture and install repeaters in 850 train carriages from April 2001 to
March 2002. The contract is valued at an estimated $8.8 million.
This in-train repeater system will allow voice and data transmission in
most long distance trains throughout Switzerland. The dual-band system for
GSM 900 and 1800 will support all GSM carriers. MIKOM will supply engineering
design, RF (Radio Frequency) equipment, installation and service for the
 project.
A feature unique of this repeater is adaptive gain. When the distance to
the Base Station is low the repeater will automatically reduce the amount of
gain. The automatic adjustment of the repeater gain, gives the GSM operators
the advantage of reducing the number of base stations by a factor of three
along the railway tracks with no reduction in signal quality.
All components of the in-train repeater distribution system are currently
 UMTS (3G) capable.
MIKOM is the world's leading manufacturer of radio frequency (RF) and
optical repeaters. Our optical distributed networks and RF repeater systems
provide coverage for every application; outdoor use, indoor installations,
tunnels, subways, and many more. MIKOM's engineering and manufacturing
facilities in Germany, Italy and the United States specialize in cost
effective, high performance coverage equipment for mobile radio networks.
Allen Telecom Inc. ( http://www.allentele.com ) is a leading supplier of
wireless equipment to the global telecommunications infrastructure market.
MIKOM focuses on providing repeaters, in-building systems and other products
that enhance both the coverage and the capacity of a wireless system. FOREM
supplies sophisticated filters, duplexers, combiners, amplifiers and microwave
radios to an array of OEM customers. Tekmar Sistemi provides integrated low
power fiber optic and cable distributed antenna systems for indoor coverage
systems. Decibel Products and Antenna Specialists manufacture land based and
mobile antennas in frequency bands that cover all of the traditional wireless
networks. Grayson Wireless supplies measurement and signal processing systems
for testing the performance of a wireless network, network-based wireless
caller geolocation systems for E911 and value added services. Comsearch
offers engineering and consulting services for wireless operators.
