LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., and FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., April 5 /PRNewswire/ --
Allscripts Healthcare Solutions (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of point-
of-care decision support tools for physicians, and Merck-Medco, the nation's
leading pharmaceutical benefits management company (PBM), today announced a
strategic alliance that will help drive real-time access to medication data at
 the point of care.
The relationship between Allscripts and Merck-Medco will focus on using
the latest electronic prescribing technology to deliver vital information to
physicians at the point of care. The available information -- formulary,
generic recommendations, drug interaction warnings and other decision support
information -- will ensure that physicians have the medication information
they need to treat patients in a safe and cost-effective manner.
"We are very excited about this alliance and the potential benefits it
will bring to healthcare," said Glen Tullman, Allscripts chief executive
officer. "We believe that providing physicians with the right information at
the right time in the decision making process will lead to better healthcare,
delivered more cost effectively. By automating the medication management
process -- from the point of writing the prescription, to the fulfillment, and
claims process -- we see a direct benefit to patients in terms of increased
medication safety, patient choice, and patient convenience."
Automating the entire medication management process and streamlining the
flow of data between physicians and their patients and between physicians and
pharmacies is seen as a critical enabler in improving medication safety and
 compliance with health plan rules.
"By streamlining data through industry standard connectivity, with the
strictest adherence to patient confidentiality, we can positively impact
healthcare quality and efficiencies," said Stephen Cohan, senior vice
president, Business Development, Merck-Medco. "Alliances, such as the one
with Allscripts, deliver value to the industry by providing physicians with
the information they need to prescribe the most appropriate medication for
 their patients."
The agreement with Allscripts reflects Merck-Medco's strategy in the
point-of-care market of focusing on organizations that have demonstrated
success with product development and deployment, growing customer base and
physician users, scalability, technical expertise and financial viability.
Merck-Medco will support the development of functions within the Allscripts
TouchWorks(TM) applications that facilitate the request, receipt, storage and
distribution of patient-specific data in compliance with strictest privacy
 regulations.
