Altera's Quartus II Design Software Supports PLD Industry's First Native Linux Port

Altera Turns to Technology Leaders Red Hat and Platform Computing to Provide

PLD Designers With Low-Cost, High-Capacity Design Environment

    SAN JOSE, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced that its Quartus(R) II
version 2.0 design software now supports Red Hat's Linux version 7.1 operating
system. Available immediately, this release is the industry's first native
Linux port, allowing programmable logic device (PLD) designers to take
advantage of more efficient distributed computing platforms. With this
capability, Altera customers can use low-cost Linux-based server farms to
reduce development costs and improve productivity.
"Engineers are using high performance distributed networks for
high-density PLD design," said Tim Southgate, vice president of software and
tools marketing at Altera. "Linux-based workstations offer a low-cost,
high-capacity alternative for design engineers who prefer a UNIX environment.
The Quartus II 2.0 software is the best PLD design software currently
available for the Linux operating system."
Altera designed the Linux edition of the Quartus II software to run
directly on the Linux operating system (OS) without the need for any
additional software, such as the WINE Windows compatibility layer. As a
result, the Quartus II software offers superior performance and does not
require the user to install any additional programs. Linux-based systems
utilize a standard PC architecture, providing a solution that is approximately
half of the cost of other UNIX-based systems while still offering faster
 application performance.

Linux Offers Powerful Distributed Computing Solution
Many design engineers take advantage of Linux's ability to support compute
farms, which make the OS ideal for cycle intensive tasks required for today's
system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) designs. By adding Linux support to the
Quartus II design software, Altera offers customers a complete design flow on
a single platform. The Quartus II software can now take advantage of workload
management solutions like Platform LSF software from Platform Computing to
effectively manage complex computing tasks to reduce design cycle times.
"Compute farms are particularly suited to simulation," said John Lenyo,
director of marketing for Model Technology, a Mentor Graphics company. "Since
we ported ModelSim to Linux, users have started to take advantage of the
price/performance of the platform to maximize their verification capacity."
Altera worked closely with leading distributed computing software provider
Platform Computing Corp. to develop a seamless Linux solution for the Quartus
II version 2.0 software. In addition to providing customers with a design
environment with reduced compile times and computing costs when compared to
UNIX-based systems, Altera, together with Platform Computing, was able to
eliminate interoperability issues across different computing platforms.
"With this offering, designers in distributed computing environments have
a solution that intelligently manages work across compute-intensive Linux
environments," said Michael Sharma, vice president, business development,
Platform Computing. "Platform LSF allows Altera customers to maximize
productivity and efficiency by sharing workload across heterogeneous compute
farms, which speeds up design cycle time and allows designers to bring
 products to market faster."
"The ability of Red Hat Linux to support load sharing applications make it
ideally suited for high performance SOPC designs," said Mark de Visser, vice
president of marketing at Red Hat. "Altera's PLD design tools will allow
engineers to fully migrate from traditional UNIX based systems to the
high-performance and robust yet cost effective Red Hat Linux solution."

     About Quartus II Design Software
Altera's Quartus II software delivers superior designer productivity and
supports system-level designs with features including LogicLock(TM)
block-based design methodology, the PowerFit(TM) fitter technology, support
