America West Reports Record March Traffic

    PHOENIX, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NYSE:   AWA) today
 reported record traffic statistics for the month of March 2001.  Revenue
 passenger miles (RPM) for March were a record 1.9 billion, up 12.3 percent
 from March 2000.  Capacity increased 5.5 percent in March to a record
 2.4 billion available seat miles (ASM).  The passenger load factor for the
 month was 76.0 percent compared with 71.4 percent in March 2000.
     "We're pleased with our industry-leading load factors," said William A.
 Franke, chairman and chief executive officer.  "We are continuing to make
 progress with operations and customer service.  While there is still room for
 further improvement, our customers have recognized our efforts and returned to
 the airline.  This is underscored by our 4.6 percent improvement in March's
 year-over-year load factor, the best of the major airlines."
