FORT WORTH, Texas, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Citing "a dedication to
supporting women and minority suppliers," the Women's Business Enterprise
National Council (WBENC) selected Fred Kahl, manager of the Diversified
Supplier Program for American Airlines, to receive one of seven individual
 2000-2001 Applause Awards.
The Applause Awards are given annually for significant accomplishments
that further WBENC's mission to break down barriers that impede the progress
 of women-owned businesses.
Kahl is being honored by WBENC for working both within American Airlines
and outside the company to ensure that women and minority suppliers have equal
 access to contracts.
"We are very pleased that Fred has received this award and will continue
to provide him with the support that he needs to make sure that American
Airlines offers equal opportunity to women and minority suppliers," said John
MacLean, vice president of purchasing at American. "It is American's strategy
to support diversity in its supply base. We will continue to develop and
implement programs to make this happen."
American's Diversified Supplier Program mentors minority- and women-owned
companies to expand their new business opportunities at American as well as
with other corporations nationally. The program also proactively works with
local chambers of commerce to educate and assist their members to enhance
 their business growth through competitiveness.
"More than 95 percent of the 600 product packages that the Diversified
Supplier Program receives each year are referred directly to the potential
internal customer at American," said MacLean. "American is one of the few
companies that 'connects' the supplier and the internal buyer expediently to
enhance the bidding opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses."
Kahl's efforts were praised by the WBENC for "demonstrating a commitment
to supplier diversity by volunteering to participate in trade shows nationwide
and successfully matching suppliers with buyers."
"As a representative of American Airlines, I am proud to be part of the
Dallas and Chicago Women's Business Council team that founded the WBENC.
Together we will continue to certify, network and assist women business owners
to grow and develop their companies," said Kahl.
Kahl was nominated for the Applause Award by Leslie Saunders, president of
Leslie Saunders Insurance and Marketing International.
