Winner of 6th Annual AMN/HCC Scholarship Essay Contest
SAN DIEGO, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- AMN Healthcare and the Health Care Communicators of San Diego (HCC) announced the winner of the 6th Annual AMN/HCC Scholarship Essay Contest. San Diego State University (SDSU) pre-medical student Diana Lazo received a $4,000 scholarship based on her essay about why she plans to enter the field of healthcare.
"I'm extremely honored," said Lazo upon learning of her win. "I am shocked because I didn't think I would actually achieve this. It is such an honor to be recognized by an organization that focuses on healthcare, communication and being active in the community."
Lazo's essay was evaluated by a panel of judges from the organization and AMN who found her essay on volunteerism both compelling and thought provoking. In addition to her essay, Lazo provided recommendations from her school advisor that noted her committee leadership role of the SDSU premedical chapter of the American Medical Students Association. She has also volunteered for Healing Hearts Across the Border, the Ronald McDonald House and the National Kidney Foundation.
Lazo came to the U.S. at the age of 9 and is the first member of her family to attend college in the U.S. After graduating from SDSU later this year, Lazo plans to enter medical school and specialize in pediatrics.
The AMN/HCC Scholarship Essay Contest was developed to foster careers in the healthcare and healthcare communicating industry, which right now is suffering from a growing nursing, physician and allied healthcare shortage in America. Winners of the scholarship must display a true dedication and interest in medicine.
Past winners of the scholarship are striving to be the future leaders in the healthcare industry. Alice Chung, last year's winner, is currently a freshman at the University of California at Berkley pursuing a degree in healthcare policy.
This year's award was presented at the Finest Awards event on March 12, 2009, at the Dana Hotel in San Diego.
"AMN Healthcare is so pleased to be involved with Healthcare Communicators," said Marcia Faller, RN, MSN, executive vice president and chief clinical officer for AMN Healthcare and presenter of the award. "HCC strives to elevate healthcare and healthcare communications to the highest level possible. That commitment aligns with AMN's efforts to promote careers in the healthcare industry. We are proud to have a chance to be a part of this scholarship program."
