Angelus Sanitary Machine Co. Selects Solid Edge from UGS as its Mechanical Computer-Aided Design System

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from UGS

CYPRESS, Calif., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- UGS (NYSE: UGS) today announces
that Angelus Sanitary Machine Co. has selected Solid Edge to design its global
line of can sealing machines. Angelus purchased 31 licenses of the award-
winning 3-D solid modeling software to replace its existing, outdated 2-D CAD
 system.
Los Angeles based Angelus Sanitary Machine custom designs and manufactures
large, complex machines used to quickly seal large volumes of cans for
companies in the food and beverage industries. These machines seal cans at
speeds up to 3,000 per minute.
"We knew we needed to move to the productivity gains in 3-D solid modeling
and Solid Edge was unanimously selected from the four CAD systems we
evaluated," says Dave Cone, CAD manager at Angelus Sanitary Machine. "The
final selection came down to two systems and we selected Solid Edge because we
felt more comfortable with its business stability as part of UGS."
"Our four-person evaluation team also selected Solid Edge because of its
built-in data management capabilities, the process-specific sheet metal design
environment and the level of pre-sales and post-sales support offered by UGS,"
 says Cone.
The company will use Solid Edge with Gibbs computer-aided manufacturing
(CAM) software from Solid Edge Voyager Program member Gibbs and Associates.
"Our integration with CAM is through the Parasolid pipeline and two of the
other systems we evaluated were either on a different modeling kernel or could
be soon," Cone says. "The stability of Solid Edge on the Parasolid kernel for
years to come provided yet another comfort level for us."

     Productivity: The Solid Edge Advantage
Solid Edge is the proven design engineering solution that will reduce time
to market by an achievable 50 percent using STREAM, an exclusive technology
that accelerates the engineering process. Solid Edge provides advanced 3-D
part modeling, large assembly design and powerful drafting, as well as
process-specific features for sheet metal, plastics, weldments and tubing
 design.
Solid Edge is the ideal CAD solution for design engineers moving from 2-D
drafting to 3-D solids-based design. With fully integrated 2-D and 3-D design
functions, Solid Edge provides a risk-free path to solid modeling design
techniques, while getting the most from existing 2-D CAD.
The Solid Edge Voyager Program includes more than 150 downstream
engineering software applications in such disciplines as finite element
analysis, manufacturing, kinematics and dynamics, electro-mechanical, rapid
prototyping, standard parts, product data management, translation,
 view/redline/animation and hardware solutions.
Solid Edge is written for Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 98 and Windows
2000 operating systems, and is distributed in eight languages to customers
around the world, including Boeing, Kaiser Optical, Alcoa, Volvo, L-3
Communications, Ohio State University, Yale University, University of
Edinburgh, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, NASA, Royal Air Force, S&C
Electric, Lincoln Electric, WMF, Electromagnetic Sciences, Liebert Corp.,
Kaeser Kompressoren, Prodrive, USSC Group, Seiko, Hyundai, Daikin and NEC.

     About Angelus Sanitary Machine Co.
Los Angeles-based Angelus Sanitary Machine Co. produces the machinery to
close approximately 65 percent of all finished cans in the world. Founded in
1910 by inventor Henry L. Guenther, Angelus has based its reputation on
perfecting Guenther's revolutionary machinery for closing or "seaming"
component ends on cans. Guenther designed and patented machinery for
producing double seams on cans, which satisfies today's stringent requirements
of the European CE Marking and EU Directives, and is manufactured under an
ISO9001 Quality Management System. As the dominant player in the industry
Angelus can seamers are used by successful and leading companies worldwide.
The company's operations include a 298,000-square-foot manufacturing plant at
its Los Angeles headquarters and European branches in Belgium and the United
Kingdom. Visit Angelus on the web at http://www.angeluscan.com .
