Ann Taylor Announces March Sales Results

    NEW YORK, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- AnnTaylor Stores Corporation
 (NYSE:   ANN) announced today that total net sales for the five week period
 ended April 7, 2001 increased 7.5% to $119,113,000 over total net sales of
 $110,845,000 for the five week period ended
 April 1, 2000.  Comparable store sales for the period decreased 6.0% compared
 to a comparable store sales decrease of 0.7% for the same five week period
 last year.
     Comparable sales by division for March 2001 were down 5.9% for Ann Taylor
 stores and down 6.0% for Ann Taylor Loft stores.  The Loft comparable store
 sales percentage reflects sales in our new Loft concept stores that have
 opened from 1998 forward.  The Loft comparable sales percentage does not
 include 21 Ann Taylor Loft outlet stores and 12 Ann Taylor Factory stores.
 Ann Taylor Chairman J. Patrick Spainhour said, "As we previously stated, we
 anticipated lingering product and assortment issues in our spring offering.
 These were reflected in the Company's March sales results. We continue to
 expect these issues to have an impact on sales until the second half of the
 year, when our collections will offer a full assortment of the updated classic
 styles that our clients prefer."
     Mr. Spainhour continued, "March sales results were further adversely
 effected by cold weather and a challenging retail environment.  We remain,
 however, committed to keeping our inventory position on plan."
     The Company reported that the West Coast was the strongest performing
 region in the country during March with comparable store sales flat to last
 year.
     During the month, the Company opened one new Ann Taylor store and two new
 Ann Taylor Loft stores.  The Company also closed one Ann Taylor Loft store
 that was located in a factory outlet mall.  Total store square footage at the
 end of the month increased 16.0% over the year before.
     For the fiscal year-to-date period ended April 7, 2001, the Company's net
 sales totaled $192,874,000, up 8.3% from $178,060,000 in the same period in
 2000.  Comparable stores sales for the fiscal year-to-date period decreased
 6.0% over the same period last year.
