APL Logistics, fresh from its U.S. $210 million acquisition of
GATX Logistics in the Americas, has had its sights on prospective European
acquisition targets. The agreement with Mare delivers an initial retail
logistics platform in the German market.
Commenting on the move, Dick Metzler, APL Logistics' CEO stated: "We are
delighted to have found a partner in Mare who shares our vision of IT-enabled,
end-to-end supply chain management. The owners of Mare have developed a proven
business model that can be replicated across other major European markets."
Mare Logistik founder and managing director Peter Maybohm said: "Our
priority has always been to secure the best future for Mare and our dedicated
staff. We felt from the outset that APL Logistics was the right partner for us
and that APL Logistics would enable us to achieve our ambitions of taking our
concept forward on a broader scale. My colleagues and I are confident we have
 made the right choice."
Mare provides import customs brokerage, warehousing, deconsolidation,
distribution and freight forwarding services to international customers both
in Germany and overseas. The company is especially strong in the retail,
consumer electronics and consumer product sectors -- areas which reflect some
of APLL's strengths in its Asian and American markets.
"We will be quick to exploit the synergies in our respective areas of
expertise," said Dick Metzler. "Mare's customers and their suppliers,
particularly in Asia, will immediately see the benefits of increased
visibility, innovation and customer care from APL Logistics' comprehensive IT
and service network, especially in the rapidly expanding Asia-Europe trade
 loop."
Mare had gross revenues of DM140 million (U.S. $66 million) in its 2000
financial year. The company employs 30 staff members in Hamburg and
Northern Germany and currently handles shipments entering the German market
via all the main gateways, including German and Benelux ports, as well as
movements to/from Poland, Hungary and Russia. Over the coming months Mare will
gradually change to trade as APL Logistics.
APLL is the supply-chain management arm of the Singapore-based NOL Group,
which is engaged in global transportation and logistics business.
