LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Crime victims in Illinois will
soon be able to track an offender in the criminal justice system, thanks to a
new agreement between Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan and Appriss, Inc.
Appriss today announced it has been selected to provide its patented VINE
service throughout the state of Illinois.
VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) is an automated
telephone notification system allowing crime victims and the public to obtain
information about an offender 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Victims can
use their telephone to obtain information about an offender in jail or a case
in the court system. They can also register for automatic notification upon a
change in an offender's custody status, such as release, transfer, and escape.
"Too often the focus has been on the rights of the accused," said Ryan.
"This program effectively provides the victims and their families the
 information they want and deserve."
The Illinois VINE deployment also includes V-NET(TM), a web-enabled
extension of the VINE program geared toward professionals serving victims.
V-NET is a secure network directly linking victim service providers, victim
advocates, and state agencies with accurate and timely information important
to victims. Illinois is the second state in the U.S. to implement the V-NET
 application.
"We are pleased to announce this partnership with Attorney General Ryan,"
said Mike Davis, Appriss president and co-founder. "By choosing VINE and
V-NET, Illinois demonstrates its commitment to empowering crime victims and
the professionals that serve them on a daily basis."
Appriss' VINE service is the nation's first and most successful voice
portal serving the criminal justice market. It uses advanced technology to
link a jail or correctional facility's booking system to a national
communications center. When an offender has a change in custody status, such
as a release or escape, the Appriss Communications Center(TM) immediately
notifies registered victims. Crime victims, victim advocates, police
officers, and the public can call the toll-free number any time, day or night,
to learn the status of an offender or register for notification.
