Arif Shakeel Named Chief Operating Officer of Western Digital

    LAKE FOREST, Calif., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Digital (NYSE:   WDC)
 has appointed Arif Shakeel chief operating officer, reporting to president and
 chief executive officer Matt Massengill.  Shakeel, 46, formerly executive vice
 president and general manager of the Company's Hard Drive Solutions (HDS)
 group, retains day-to-day responsibility for the HDS group and adds operating
 responsibility for new storage initiatives in the gaming device, set-top box
 and other sectors.  In his expanded role, Shakeel will also provide
 directional guidance to Western Digital's new venture activities.
     Under Shakeel's leadership since October 1999, WD's HDS group returned to
 desktop industry leadership through an emphasis on quality, time-to-market
 performance in both 5400 and 7200 RPM technology, low cost and efficiency in
 its manufacturing operations, and strengthening relationships with its OEM and
 reseller partners.  The Company's core hard drive business returned to
 profitability in the December 2000 quarter.
     Shakeel joined Western Digital in 1985 as a product manager.  From his
 assignment in product marketing, he moved from program management to vice
 president of marketing, vice president of business development, Far East
 sales, and vice president of materials for Asia.
     Shakeel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from
 Memphis State University and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
