Belle Isle Zoo Opens for the Season on May 1

    DETROIT, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- The Belle Isle
 Zoo celebrates its season opening on May 1 through October 31 from 10 a.m. to
 5 p.m. daily.  Check out the newest animals and have a chance to win a brand
 new bike!
     Throughout the month of May visitors to the Belle Isle Zoo can enter their
 name in a drawing to win a brand new ten speed bicycle.  No purchase is
 necessary to enter the drawing.  Entry forms are available at the Belle Isle
 Zoo gate entrance.  Entries must be received no later than May 31, 2001.  The
 winner will be notified following the random drawing held on June 15, 2001.

     Visitors can welcome the newest member of the BIZ family, Homer, a
 9 year-old Hoffmann's two-toed Sloth.  Known as the slowest animal on earth,
 Homer spends most of his day upside-down in a tree, rarely coming to the
 ground.  Visitors can see Homer in action in the Iguana exhibit at the Belle
 Isle Zoo.
     Other animals to see during a scenic stroll over the boardwalk at the
 Belle Isle Zoo include African lions, Lucky the tiger, red pandas and bison.
 Docents and zookeepers will be on hand to answer any questions about the
 animals.
     While spending a day on magnificent Belle Isle, families won't want to
 miss out on a visit to the Belle Isle Aquarium.  Having opened in 1904, the
 Belle Isle Aquarium is one of the nation's most historic aquariums, and
 features 5,000 animals, including freshwater stingrays, electric eels and
 colorful coral-reef fish.
     The Belle Isle Zoo is located on 13 acres in the center of Detroit's
 magnificent island park, Belle Isle in the Detroit River.  The Zoo features a
 3/4 mile-long-elevated boardwalk that allows visitors a panoramic view of the
 animal exhibits.  The Belle Isle Zoo is open through October 31 from 10 a.m.
 to 5 p.m. daily and is located just two miles east of downtown Detroit.
 Entrance to the island is on East Jefferson Avenue at East Grand Boulevard.
 The Zoo is located on Central Avenue.  Admission is $3.00 for adults; $2.00
 for senior citizens 62 and older and students; $2.00 for children ages 2 to
