He succeeds longtime Trustee Louis Bindner who retired March 1. Yates,
59, was elected to the Board following an extensive search conducted by a
three-member committee composed of Berger Independent Trustees and headed by
 Katherine Cattanach.
"We are delighted that Dr. Yates will be joining the Independent Trustees
at Berger Funds," Cattanach said. "Al will bring a fresh perspective to the
Board, drawing from his years of experience as a world-renown educator and
administrator, his position of leadership within the not-for-profit world and
his experience sitting on for-profit corporate boards. His thoughtful
approach to policy development and implementation, his collegial approach to
problem solving and his warm personal style will be welcome and valued by all
 of us on the Board."
Yates has been President of Colorado State University in Fort Collins and
Chancellor of the Colorado State University System since 1990. He holds a
B.S. (magna cum laude) in Chemistry and Mathematics from Memphis State
University and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemical Physics from Indiana
University. He is listed in Who's Who in America and American Men of Science,
 among other publications.
The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Yates is a strong believer in
community service. He has served on scores of local and national panels,
councils and committees. Currently he is a member of the Commission on
Leadership Development of the American Council on Education and serves on the
President's Council of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and
 Colleges.
He sees joining the Berger Funds Board of Trustees as an extension of that
commitment. "I am extraordinarily pleased to be joining the Board. I've
watched Berger Funds for years and their commitment to the community and to
the interests of consumers is a great reason to be flattered to be joining
 such a group," he said.
His dedication to the community also includes membership on the boards of
such non-profit organizations as the Longs Peak Council Boy Scouts of America,
Rose Community Foundation in Denver and Colorado's Bright Beginnings.
Yates' experience in the corporate world includes serving as a member of
the board of Directors for Adolph Coors Company. He also is a board member of
the Denver Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and served for
eight years as a member of the board of directors of First Interstate Bank in
 Denver.
A prolific writer, Yates often contributes to the OpEd pages of Colorado's
