NEW YORK, March 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernstein Liebhard LLP is investigating potential Neocate Formula lawsuits on behalf of infants and children who allegedly developed serious bone disorders while being fed these amino acid formulas, including rickets, hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels) and unexplained bone fractures.
"A recent study has suggested that infants and children given Neocate Formula may be more likely to develop serious bone disorders or suffer unexplained broken bones. Parents and caregivers are urged to contact our attorneys for a free legal consult if their child was prescribed Neocate Formula and subsequently experienced any of these problems," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs, medical devices, and consumer products.
Neocate Formula and Bone Disorders
Neocate Formula is a line of amino acid formulas, also known as elemental formulas, given to infants and children who cannot tolerate cows-milk or soy formulas due to:
- Cow milk allergy
- Soy allergy
- Multiple food protein intolerance (MFPI)
- Food-allergy-associated conditions, such as GERD or Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Short bowel syndrome
- Other GI disorders
Because Neocate Formula is made from essential amino acids, protein in its simplest form, it is easier to digest than formulas made from cows-milk or soy proteins.
The potential link between serious bone disorders and Neocate Formula was noted in an April 2017 study that appeared in the medical journal Bone. The research focused on 51 infants and children who had been diagnosed with unexplained hypophosphatemia. Skeletal radiographs demonstrated fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases. The study authors noted that many of the subjects' diets consisted solely of Neocate Formula products for variable periods of time prior to their presentation. Once they were given supplemental phosphate or switched to a different formula product, the children improved.
In light of their findings, the authors of the study recommended careful monitoring of mineral metabolism in children fed elemental formula products.
You and your family may be entitled to compensation for medical bills and other damages if your child was prescribed Neocate Formula and was subsequently diagnosed with rickets, dangerously low phosphate levels or unexplained broken bones.
