BCBSAZ's Immunization Outreach program was recognized in the Buck Shots
category, which honors communication initiatives that educate the public and
health care providers about immunizations. The comprehensive Immunization
Outreach program was implemented last year to educate BCBSAZ HMO customers
about recommended childhood, adolescent, flu and pneumonia immunizations. The
program includes customer and provider notification via mailers and
newsletters, educational materials and tools to keep track of immunizations.
BCBSAZ's Health Safari program received the Big Shots for Baby Shots Award
in the Snap Shots category. This category recognizes special event
partnerships designed to educate, promote and provide immunizations to Arizona
children. BCBSAZ started the Health Safari program in 1989 to educate
children about their health and identify possible health problems. Designed
primarily for grades K-6, the Health Safari is a 28 ft. custom van, colorfully
decorated outside and specially equipped inside to provide basic health
screenings and education programs free of charge. BCBSAZ's partnership with
community health professionals, who conduct the screenings and provide the
immunizations, has allowed the company to serve more than 140,000 children
 since the program's inception.
The Arizona Partnership for Immunization is a statewide coalition of over
400 individuals and organizations including: ADHS, AHCCCS plans, child
advocacy groups, commercial HMOs, county health departments, and community
health centers, insurers, nurses, physicians, professional organizations
representing providers, vaccine distributors, and others. Their mission is to
improve the health of all Arizonans by improving immunizations across the
 lifespan.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is an independent licensee of the Blue
Cross and Blue Shield Association. More than 700,000 Arizonans rely upon Blue
