British Tourist Authority Appoints GCI Group to Implement Global PR Campaign

GCI Awarded Account Following

Three-Way Top-Ten Agency Pitch

Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from GCI Group

NEW YORK, April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- GCI Group, one
of the industry's largest public relations firms, today announced that is has
been awarded the global account for the British Tourist Authority (BTA)
specifically to deal with the challenge of revitalizing tourism to Britain in
light of the foot and mouth outbreak. GCI was represented by nine of its
global offices and was awarded the business following a three-way, top-ten
 agency pitch.
Led by its London office, GCI will work in partnership with the BTA's
existing in-house press and public relations team and its overseas offices to
promote the UK as a safe and desirable tourist destination following the foot
and mouth situation. Utilizing GCI's global network, the campaign will focus
initially on ten key markets, including the US, Canada, Germany, Australia and
 New Zealand.
"Spending by overseas visitors was expected to rise in 2001 by around two
per cent, worth an estimated $19 billion. We now estimate that the fall in
inbound tourism following the outbreak will cause a drop in revenue of between
$2.2 billion and $3.6 billion," said Sandie Dawe, Marketing Communications
Director of BTA. "Our primary concern at BTA is to safeguard the long-term
interests of the British tourism industry, especially the small and medium
sized businesses which have been most affected by foot and mouth. GCI will
also work with us to rebuild the tremendous historical interest in Britain as
 a tourist destination."
"We are pleased to be recognized for both our global network and our
entrepreneurial approach to client service," said Bob Feldman, president and
CEO, GCI Group. "We are confident that we can help promote the message that
UK is open for business and is a safe and exciting place to visit."
