Brocade and BMC Software Expand Partnership to Deliver Application-Driven Storage Management for Brocade-Based SANS

BMC Software Endorses Brocade Intelligent Fabric Services Architecture,

Brocade Joins BMC Software ACSM Consortium

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from Brocade Communications Systems, Inc.

PALM DESERT, Calif., STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, April 10 /PRNewswire/ --
Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD) and
BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE: BMC), the leading provider of e-business systems
management, announced today that they are expanding their partnership to
deliver enhanced storage resource management solutions for Brocade-based
Storage Area Networks (SANs). As part of the relationship with Brocade, BMC
Software announced today the general availability of PATROL(R) for Brocade
SilkWorm(R). Management and monitoring of Brocade-based SANs is now available
through BMC Software's Application-Centric Storage Management solution.
Today, Brocade also announced membership in BMC Software's
Application-Centric Storage Management(TM) (ACSM) Consortium. Through this
membership, Brocade and BMC Software will work together to develop innovative
storage management technologies that ensure data reliability and availability
 across heterogeneous storage environments.
Brocade SilkWorm fabric switches provide the world's leading intelligent
platform for networking storage. Using Brocade SilkWorm switches, customers
can connect servers with storage devices through a SAN, creating a highly
reliable and scalable environment for storage applications. With the
availability of PATROL for Brocade SilkWorm, SAN customers can now use BMC
Software management solutions to proactively manage Brocade-based,
heterogeneous SANs. Management capabilities include real-time
"application-level views" of all devices in a SAN through dynamic discovery,
application-level management of storage devices to optimize resource
utilization, and integration of SAN events into BMC Software's PATROL
 management infrastructure.
The delivery of PATROL for Brocade SilkWorm is the next step in the
relationship between Brocade and BMC Software. In late 2000, BMC Software
became a Brocade Fabric Access(TM) Partner, gaining access to the value-added
management capabilities and services of the Brocade Fabric Operating System
(Fabric OS(TM)), through Fabric Access, the API to the Fabric OS. The Brocade
Fabric OS, the key applications enabler within the Brocade Intelligent Fabric
Services Architecture-which was also announced today by Brocade-allows
companies to create and scale highly resilient and secure multi-switch SANs
and easily manage the SAN infrastructure. The Fabric OS also provides a
feature-rich platform for SAN-designed applications and offers advanced
features for proactive SAN management and monitoring, enabling applications to
dynamically discover physical components in a SAN and monitor SAN fabric
 resources.
"The Brocade approach to providing an intelligent platform for storage
networking enables BMC to more easily deliver SAN-designed management
applications for our mutual customers. They gain simplified SAN management
while protecting and securing business critical data," said Chris Gahagan,
vice president and general manager, Recovery and Storage Management Business
Unit, BMC Software. "With the release of PATROL for Brocade SilkWorm, we
provide our mutual customers with advanced management applications that are
optimized for Brocade networked storage environments."
BMC Software's Application-Centric Storage Management solutions provide an
application view of physical storage devices, correlating the application to
the storage device, and then optimizing the application's performance on the
storage device. BMC Software solutions proactively manage and monitor the most
complex IT environments, enabling around-the-clock availability of
 business-critical applications.
"We are pleased to be part of BMC Software's ACSM Consortium, which aims
to ensure data reliability and availability across heterogeneous storage
environments," said Jay Kidd, Brocade vice president of Product Marketing. "By
increasing the intelligence in the storage area networking fabric, Brocade is
providing our application partners with a platform for next-generation storage
applications and services, such as application-driven storage management."

The Brocade Intelligent Fabric Services Architecture
The Secure Fabric OS(TM) is a cornerstone of the Brocade Intelligent
Fabric Services Architecture, also announced today by Brocade. The
architecture defines a networking foundation to support the requirements of
next-generation enterprise storage applications, such as resource optimization
through server and storage consolidation; simplified management through
storage virtualization and centralized management; and high availability
architectures such as server clustering and data replication for disaster
recovery. Together, the Brocade SilkWorm family of fabric switches
-- including the new SilkWorm 12000 -- and the Fabric OS form the industry
 standard for next-generation enterprise-class SANs.
