BOSTON, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An active participant in the local real estate industry as well as his community, David Friedberg of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Brookline has been named the 2009 Greater Boston REALTOR(R) of the Year (GBAR).

"I was shocked to receive this award," said Friedberg who became a GBAR member in 1989. "I don't look for recognition when I am volunteering or lending a hand. I am, however, honored to receive this award and it will inspire me to continue with my efforts."

The Realtor(R) of the Year Award was first presented locally in 1957, and it honors members for their volunteerism and industry work over the past 18 months in three specific areas: participation and service to the REALTOR(R) organization on the local, state and national levels; community involvement, including volunteerism in community service projects and membership and support of civic and charitable organizations; and outstanding business and real estate industry accomplishments.

"David is an outstanding example of what it means to be a responsible professional in our industry," said GBAR President John Ranco. "It's important to recognize those Realtors(R) who go above and beyond."

Friedberg served as GBAR president in 2008 during which time he championed an initiative to give GBAR members a two-hour module of continuing education at no cost. Also in 2008, David served as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Realtors(R) (NAR).

"In all the years I have known David he has shown a dedication to the Realtor(R) organization," said Gary Rogers, president of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors(R) (MAR). "He always speaks his mind about what he feels is best for our members, which I applaud him for."

This year Friedberg serves as the Chairman of the GBAR Nominating Committee and sits on the Boards of Directors for GBAR and MAR as well as the MAR Business Development Committee. In addition, David has sat on GBAR's Strategic Planning, Education, Business Development and Professional Standards Committees.

Within the local community, David volunteers for Community Servings, a Boston-based organization that delivers free meals to people who are homebound with AIDS/HIV and other acute illnesses. He also participated in this year's Pan-Mass Challenge and is an active supporter and fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Finally, David is a member of the Coolidge Corner Merchants Association.

In the past, David has also been awarded the Coldwell Banker President's Council honor for exemplifying leadership and management skills.

The Greater Boston Association of Realtors(R) is a private trade association with more than 5,500 Realtor(R) members who specialize in residential real estate in Eastern Massachusetts. GBAR is the largest of five divisions of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board (GBREB).
