WASHINGTON, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- As a highlight of the opening day of
the Airports Council International - North America's (ACI-NA) Economic
Specialty Conference, the airports winning the yearly Richard A. Griesbach
Excellence in Airport Concessions contest have been announced. This year the
top prize, the coveted "Richard A. Griesbach Award of Excellence," was won by
a medium-sized airport, Canada's Calgary International Airport. Calgary also
took first place awards in the Best Food and Beverage Program and also Best
Retail/Specialty Program in its class size category. A newcomer to the
contest, Calgary has proved that extraordinary passenger counts are not
required to launch an excellent and successful concession program.

Now in its fourth year, the contest brought in a record number of
submissions in 2001. According to Leonard A. Ginn, ACI-NA's Sr. Vice-
President of Economic and Associate Affairs, the 64 contest entries covered a
myriad of the superior concessions being offered to the traveling public of
North America. "Calgary was singled out for recognition in the top award
because of the mix of products and services offered, the innovations brought
to the airport environment, and the overall quality of their program," said
 Ginn.
Trends in airport retailing are reflected throughout the winning airport
programs. Responding to the passenger's demands for increased convenience,
airports are welcoming services such as full-service spas, dry cleaners,
pharmacies and video/DVD rentals. Innovative concessions are recognized for
their creative ability to handle the 24-hour nature of the airport business,
some of which include vending machines with best-selling books and mail-in DVD
returns. Today's trends include inclusion of local theming reflecting the
local community and culture through products, menu mix and architecture that
 represents the region.
Other newcomers to the contest, Salt Lake City and Ontario, CA
respectively brought home second place finishes in their categories. Repeat
winners included Vancouver, Portland, McCarran Las Vegas, Philadelphia and
 Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airports.
The contest seeks to promote innovation and excellence in airport
concession programs. Entries are divided into three class sizes: Class A/B
(Small Airports), Class C (Medium Airports) and Class D (Large Airports).
