Sep 13, 2011, 08:00 ET from Cancer Support Community Greater Miami

MIAMI, Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Support Community Greater Miami is proud to host a workshop from the popular Frankly Speaking About Cancer national cancer education series. The workshop addresses the topic of breast reconstruction options, featuring a local surgeon and a breast cancer survivors panel. The event is free and open to breast cancer patients, their family and friends. It will be held on Wednesday, September 14 from 6-9 pm at Cancer Support Community Greater Miami – 8609 S. Dixie Highway, Miami.

According to a recent Cancer Support Community survey of 762 women with breast cancer who were eligible for breast reconstruction, 43 percent of patients do not receive information about reconstruction options when making treatment decisions at diagnosis.

"While there have been improvements in breast cancer treatment, there remains a need for education about breast reconstruction," explained Max L. Polo, M.D., board certified plastic surgeon, Polo Plastic Surgery. "This workshop helps to empower the nearly 1,500 women in Miami-Dade County who are diagnosed each year with the tools and resources needed to make an informed decision about reconstruction."

Workshop attendees will receive an educational booklet, hear from a board certified plastic surgeon, and will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a panel of breast cancer survivors.

"We are pleased to make this workshop available to our community to help ensure that women affected by breast cancer have access to the most up-to-date information about their reconstruction options following a cancer diagnosis, and the emotional and social support they need to manage the experience," said Peggy Rios, Ph.D., program director, Cancer Support Community Greater Miami.
