Canopus Previews MediaEdge - An Affordable LAN-Based Video Networking Solution

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from Canopus Corporation

    LAS VEGAS, NAB, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- In a
move to broaden its line of MPEG-based products for high quality video
distribution, Canopus Corporation (booth S4154) today introduced MediaEdge.
MediaEdge is an affordable video networking solution that uses the company's
proven MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 compression technology to deliver professional-level
video over LANs. Designed specifically to be a flexible, affordable and
reliable alternative to VCR/VideoCD-based kiosks and information stations,
MediaEdge (which includes Canopus' Amber MPEG encoding module and MediaEdge
server software) is used in a standard Windows-based server attached via LAN
to multiple Windows-based workstations or set-top boxes.
Supporting video-on-demand, live broadcast, streaming media applications,
and pre-programmed playback, MediaEdge is ideal for high quality video
distribution in retail stores, schools, corporations, airports, museums,
theaters and other locations where video-based information is shared.
MediaEdge is being successfully demonstrated in a cinema complex in Japan
where it is used to show preview trailers to theatergoers in various locations
 throughout the multiplex.
MediaEdge's major advantage over traditional kiosks or information
stations is how easy it is to update and manage content. With kiosks and
information stations, each unit is self-contained and any updates to content
must be physically made to each machine. With MediaEdge, information is simply
updated on the server once, and all clients are updated automatically.
MediaEdge clients can also access the MediaEdge server and make requests
 easily via a web browser.
"MediaEdge is the next step in continuing our efforts to provide a range
of video distribution options," said Hiro Yamada, president and CEO of Canopus
Corporation. "With MediaEdge, we provide system integrators and application
developers an affordable, highly adaptable, LAN-based video distribution
solution that delivers the high quality necessary for success in the
entertainment, retail, corporate, government and education arenas."
MediaEdge will be available this summer from Canopus and its authorized
 distributors and VARs.
