NEW YORK, Aug. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a declaration issued by the Central Rabbinical Congress of the United States and Canada, in reaction to lobbying by the Israeli government and its supporters against the Iran nuclear deal.
"For they do not speak for peace" (Psalms 35:20)
As the nations of the world are in the midst of a peace effort, the various Zionist groups, to whose agenda and reckless approach this plan does not conform, have launched an all-out war to stop the plan. They intimidate and confront leaders of world nations in a horrific manner.
To our dismay, various groups from the Orthodox camp have followed the Zionist lead, and made their voices heard against the peace plan, creating the impression that the entire Jewish people agrees with them, G-d forbid.
Therefore we declare unequivocally that the Jewish people disassociates itself from these despicable acts. We have no connection to the actions of these reckless groups. The Israeli government, and its followers and sympathizers among the Orthodox, do not speak in the name of the Jewish people, and cannot claim to represent it.
Jews faithful to the Torah have no connection with this provocation against the nations. This provocation is completely against the teachings of our Torah, which commands us to seek the peace of the governments where we reside and to live humbly under the nations of the world in the lands of our exile, as is written in the book of Jeremiah (29:7), "Seek the peace of the city to which I have exiled you, and pray for it to the Almighty, for with its peace will you have peace." Certainly, then, we must not carry on a war of political pressure against any nation, much less the nation under whose protection we live.
We disassociate ourselves entirely from these despicable actions, which are likely to arouse anti-Semitism in the entire world.
It is a tremendous obligation for anyone who has the ability to do so to publicize to the entire world that the Zionist movement and its followers do not speak in the name of the Jewish people.
May the wicked staff not rest upon the lot of the righteous, and may the Almighty send a spirit of enlightenment from on high, amen.
Signed this month of Elul, the month of mercy, 5775, [August 2015]
